The Modem receives the internet data signals from your ISP (Via ADSL line, cable Modem, wireless connection etc) and convert and transmit those data to the Wireless Router via a Network cable.

The Wireless Router receives those data signals and transmits them to all the network terminals via wireless network medium.

Note: You can setup your wireless network without a Wireless Router in case if your Modem has a Router capabilities like the most of the new internet Modems.

Hence, an ad hoc committee is one that is formed to handle a particular issue. Something that is ad hoc or that is done on an ad hoc basis happens or is done only when the situation makes it necessary or desirable, rather than being arranged in advance or being part of a general plan. Interesting, huh.

So now that we have the ad hoc definition let’s see if we can use it in a sentence that will impress your friends. For example, “On an ad hoc basis, Congress has placed ceilings on military aid to specific countries”. In this case ad hoc is used as an adjective meaning improvised or impromptu. In truth, the ad hoc definition is exactly that: ad hoc.

Common terms using this word are found in the IT industry and include: ah hoc network, ad hoc query, ad hoc surveys, ad hoc testing, ad hoc report, ad hoc analysis, and ad hoc protocol list. Actually, ad hoc has several specific applications in the world of Information Technology. The ad hoc definition as used in; ad hoc networks, ad hoc reporting and ad hoc testing has a very precise meaning pertaining to the Information Technology Industry.

When it comes to computer networks, ad hoc is typically associated with wireless devices. When a connection is established between two or more computers without having a base station, they have formed an ad hoc network. The ad hoc definition still holds in this case because the connection is not permanent but rather has been formed temporarily to meet a particular need. Ad hoc reporting, also called ad hoc querying, refers to a system that permits users to customize a data query from a database instead of limiting them to preset, “canned” options. The decentralized nature of wireless ad hoc network makes them suitable for a variety of applications where central nodes can’t be relied on, and may improve the scalability of wireless ad hoc network compared to wireless managed networks, though theoretical and practical limits to the overall capacity of such networks have been identified.

An ad hoc network is made up of multiple nodes connected by links .

Steps to set up an Ad Hoc Network.

For this, you just need to setup the ad hoc network and share the folder which needs to be used by the client computer. In this mechanism, one computer acts as a host containing the sharable folder and other computers act as clients that connect to the host in order to access the shared folder. This is a temporary network which gets disappeared once the host computer is shut down or goes out of range in case of wireless network. For setting up wireless ad hoc network, you can follow the below mentioned steps:

1. Go to the control panel & open Network Connections. Right click and choose properties, select the wireless networks tab.

2. Click on Add button present in the preferred networks section. Uncheck the box saying this key is provided by me automatically and check the box saying this is a computer to computer network.

4. Save the changes by clicking on OK button and your network is now ready to appear in preferred network section.

Once the ad hoc network is created, you need to look for the wireless icon present in the system tray, right click the same and then choose view available networks option. This type of network is known as networking of two computers without the help of a router or an access point and is very helpful in business meeting environments where a quick file sharing is required.

Wireless Ad Hoc Network.

Why and when would you want to install a wireless ad hoc network?  The first type of set up will be if you do have an internet connection but you lack a wireless access point or a wireless router to share that connection.  First, each computer will need a wireless adapter. Next click the advance tab near the bottom right and click (computer to computer ad-hoc networks only). Second you will need to add your ad hoc wireless network so click add. Fill in the network name (SSID) and choose WEP encryption.  You will want to use WEP if are using older adapters and use WPA if you are sure all the computers on the ad-hoc wireless network can handle it.  Because we will want everyone to share our wired Ethernet connection you will need to enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the wired network adapter not the wireless adapter.  Just go to your network connections and right click the Ethernet connections and press the advanced tab.  Check the box that says enable ICS. ICS will act as a DHCP server and assign private TCP/IP address to your ad-wireless network clients.  Each computer will receive a TCP/IP address from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254.  ICS will also tell the computers on the network the location of their default gateway which is the computer you set up ICS on.

Trouble shooting a wireless ad hoc network can be a head ache.  Make sure you set up the ICS computer and one client computer.

Basics of Setting Up Wireless Ad Hoc Network.

To begin with, networking was common among computers of several organizations and government bodies over the last century. So if you have decided on a wireless network, you should know something about how to set up wireless network. First consider how many computers will be connected to the network, where the home of the entire network will be, and what operating system do you plan to use in the systems. If you plan to build a new network and not develop / upgrade an existing one, place the wireless router in a central location so the network coverage is good throughout the place. The next step is to fix access points on the router. The placement of the access points is also important as they also affect the speed and connectivity of the computers in wireless networking. The next step is to configure your wireless adapter with the router and access points. All subsequent settings can be set up manually but it is important that all the wireless adapters must share the same parametric settings for the wireless networking to function properly.

Once this has been done, the last step is to configure the Ad Hoc network to the home LAN or all the computers that need to access the wireless network. There is also a security aspect which one needs to consider when you set up wireless network. Other aspects related to setting up a wireless networking could be easily understood while working on it, or if you think you cannot do the work yourself, get a technician or company to set up wireless network.
